No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
